Chief Operating Officer (COO)
Reports to: Executive Director
Status: Full-Time Exempt Position, Hybrid; Primarily Remote with
occasional in-person meetings & event requirements
Job Purpose
The COO plays a critical role partnering with the senior leadership team for strategic decision making and operations as ECM continues to enhance and expand its quality K-12 arts and entrepreneurial programming across the state of South Carolina. This is a tremendous opportunity for a successful leader with a reputation for innovation and integrity, immediately to maximize and strengthen the internal capacity of a well-respected, high-impact nonprofit. The successful candidate will be a visionary hands-on
“servant leader,” who thrives in a fast-paced environment achieving success by means of developing partnerships and supporting teams.
Duties and Responsibilities
Leading Internally
● Working closely with and presenting new ideas to the Executive Director and Senior Director of Educational Strategy to carry out the mission of the
organization
● Providing supportive, inclusive, and “servant”-style leadership, with a positive “WOOHOO” attitude; being a good listener with an open-door policy
● Supporting and encouraging the staff to carry out yet-to-be-launched
initiatives, as well as existing programs
● Acting with an attitude of being a “leader” rather than “the boss”
● Communicating well orally and in writing; expecting accountability from the team and ensuring ongoing clear and transparent communication
● Providing visionary and resourceful leadership
● Supporting and monitoring budget
● Encouraging staff participation in relevant regional and national conferences and other travel opportunities that strengthen ECM’s work
● Maintaining an evolving organizational chart, which clearly defines roles and responsibilities for each position within ECM’s stated goal framework
Assisting in Development and Financial Management
● Working closely with the CEO and ECM’s external CPA firm in all areas of
finance and financial reporting, including grant reports, federal grant and audit compliance; assisting with monthly financial reports and annual audit
● Together with the Executive Director, developing and maintaining a balanced annual operating budget
● Together with the Executive Director, developing and executing ECM’s
annual development plan, including grant writing, proposal preparation, and
fundraising initiatives
● Cooperating with the Executive Director in securing financial support from individuals, foundations, and corporations, including developing and tracking proposals and reporting to all foundation and corporate grantors
● Together with the Executive Director, developing and maintaining ongoing relationships with donors at all levels
● Managing CRM software and overseeing staff responsible for data entry and gift processing
Additional Roles & Responsibilities
● Representing ECM in the communities where it is active and beyond
● Attending and presenting at regional/national conferences
● Creating and presenting board reports, as appropriate
Qualifications
- A minimum Bachelor’s Degree required
- A minimum of three years of experience in general financial administration is required; nonprofit specific finance experience preferred
- Experience in nonprofit or school administration supervisory roles, providing leadership is a plus
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- A “servant leader,” not “the boss” attitude
- Ability to travel when necessary
- Detail-oriented with a global and entrepreneurial mindset
- Experience with excel spreadsheets, Google Forms, & Google Drive
- Experience with or willingness to learn software such as Loom, Asana, and Canva
